Below is a list of charts currently available. All the titles shown were originally written for or commissioned by professional, working ensembles. Most of them are suitable for college-level ensembles but are NOT recommended for high school ensembles or any beginner-level groups. This music is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for medium to advanced college ensembles, military jazz-dance-stage bands, adult community jazz ensembles & professional-level rehearsal bands who are looking for music that is different and unique - music apart from and beyond the jazz music publication industry’s standard fare. Titled in honor of Bob Brookmeyer’s honorary Doctorate degree from UMKC, Kansas City.   Description Solo feature ballad for 1st alto sax. Mysterioso intro leads to pretty impressionistic ballad. Much use of dom. 9th+11 chords give this piece a ‘neo-Strayhorn’ feeling and sound. Description Scored as a walking ballad with a “sorta-Basie” feel. Chart features clarinet melody solo, plus additional choruses for guitar (or piano) and 2nd trombone. A modulation leads to the out chorus, with ad-lib clarinet over the top. This one will delight audiences just about anywhere. Doubles: alto sax 1 dbls. clar.

  Description The 1914 quasi-ragtime piece is here transformed into a witty and deftly swinging medium-tempo feature for piano solo and jazz orchestra. The final ensemble - reminiscent of the Ellington and Basie bands - really cooks!

  Description Dedicated to the most famous jazz record label of all, this smoothly-voiced 18-bar theme is in a medium-tempo “Killer Joe” groove. Lots of blowing room. Shout chorus after solos is added kicker. Woodwind plays tenor sax. Recorded by the Dave Zoller Sextet on “Love Song To a Genie” (dpz JAZZ 3060).

  Title CHERB (JC-230) ($30.00)
  Description This one-movement jazz tone poem has 3 distinct sections: a lyrical section in even 8th-note feel with theme statements by piano and flugelhorn (alternating 4/4 & 5/4 time), a slightly faster minor-key section featuring alto sax jazz, and a slower, sleazy section featuring trumpet ad-lib (plunger is encouraged!). A piano & bass ad-lib duet leads back to a recap of the first theme and a mysterioso ending. Piano part is a bit detailed, but very playable. Transitions between sections will take a bit of rehearsal. Woodwind doubles alto & tenor sax; trumpet doubles flugelhorn. Piece is dedicated to the memory of George Cherb, a legendary figure in Dallas-Ft. Worth music circles and one of the top big band lead trumpeters of the postwar era.   Description Minor-key jazz waltz in tribute to the late bassist-composer is a feature for alto sax. Many Mingus-like touches: sudden double-time passages, 3-horn simultaneous improv., etc. Ending features alto in unaccompanied ad-lib cadenza. Trumpet is on flugelhorn.   Description Minor-key uptempo showpiece. Floating rhythm section figure with fast hi-hat drum part is cushion for moody post-bop style lines played by the three horns. Advanced harmony, ‘cluster’ horn voicings. ‘B’ section chord progression provides solo space for piano and flugelhorn (tpt. optional), separated by a reprise of the ‘A’ section bridge material.   Description Written originally to feature Dallas alto sax ace Randy Lee, this 11 minute work is divided into three different styles of instrumental blues: a slow, bluesy, ” big-city-at-3 a.m.’ section; a medium shuffle section with a bit of Ellington influence and a final up-tempo ‘hard bop’ section.   Description A roaring, up-tempo burner that’s solidly in the hard-bop mold. This one mixes straight-ahead & Latin jazz, along with some 3/4 & 4/4 time signature switches. Open solo space. Coda is 3-horn simultaneous ‘free-for-all’ over sizzling Latin-jazz vamp. Then - on cue - the ensemble segues into a short non-skid ‘button’ ending that will leave the audience mildly devastated!   Title 7th & CHRISTOPHER (JC-218) ($14.00)
  Description This medium-tempo minor-key swinger is a challenging yet fun ride for the more advanced jazz combo. Chart has an ABCA form as follows: a misterioso ‘hard-bop’ style line stated by the horns over a shifting bass line in parallel fifths. The ‘B’ theme is unison horns over a bass line made up entirely of up-beat 8th notes. The ‘C’ theme is more unison horns, this time over a driving shuffle rhythm and a chromatic four-chord cycle of dominant 7th+9 chords. Solos are bass, trombone and tenor sax. Bass part is demanding, with lots of double stops. Woodwind is on tenor throughout. Recorded by the Dave Zoller Sextet on “Snug Harbor” (dpz JAZZ 3061).

  Title A SKETCH OF FRED CRANE (JC-220) ($17.00)
  Description A medium-tempo swing feature for piano. Form is AABA, plus a 16-bar tag based on pedal-tone harmony. The result is a sunny swing piece with a slight Dixieland accent! Both tpt. & tbn. are in cup mutes throughout. Woodwind
is on clarinet.
Named in honor of the late, great Dallas jazz piano virtuoso featured with Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Doc Severinsen, Joe Williams and others. As heard on the CD “Snug Harbor” by the Dave Zoller Sextet (dpz JAZZ 3061).

Ingenious ‘melody-in-the-bass’ tune created out of the eight-note diminished (‘half-step/whole-step’) scale is stated by bass trombones & rhythm in first chorus; joined in the second chorus by tenor trombones in a contrary-motion melody. Solo is for 3rd trombone. There is a ‘send-off’ ensemble (cued) and a 3-chorus ensemble shout before the recap.
